Steel Challenge matches are run under Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) rules. Each stage consists of an array of steel targets — four or five plates plus a mandatory stop plate. Competitors shoot each stage five times and drop their slowest run; your score is the sum of the four fastest strings.

Steel Challenge is one of the most beginner-friendly formats in competitive shooting — no movement required, no reloads, and the rules are simple. Divisions are available for rimfire pistol and rifle, centerfire pistol, and shotgun.
